  • The series of tweets consisted entirely of banana emojis – a racial slur

Charlton and Lyle Taylor will report a Bradford City fan to the police for 'another example of ignorant, small minded racism' after the striker received abuse on Twitter.

The 29-year-old flagged up four tweets on Sunday afternoon from @BantamRealTalk that consisted entirely of banana emojis – a racial slur – sent following Bradford's 1-0 defeat at Charlton on Saturday.

Taylor scored the only goal of the game, which meant Bradford edged closer to relegation.

Sportsmail understands that Charlton and the striker plan to take action by flagging the incident up to the police.

It follows a series of racially motivated incidents involving England-born players in recent months.

Danny Rose and Callum Hudson-Odoi were huaranged with monkey chants during England's win against Montenegro last week, while four Chelsea fans were suspended for allegedly racially abusing Raheem Sterling in December.

Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also had a banana thrown at him during his side's win against Tottenham last year.

@BantamRealTalk also replied to a tweet of Taylor's with the comment: 'And you wonder why fans come onto the pitch and attack absolute muppet'.

That comes after high-profile example of Jack Grealish being attacked on the pitch in Aston Villa's win against Birmingham earlier this month.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: 'Any allegations of racist abuse will be taken seriously and we would encourage anyone who witnesses inappropriate behaviour to report it to police.'

A Bradford City spokesperson added: ‘The club is investigating racist remarks made on Twitter towards Charlton Athletic’s Lyle Taylor following Saturday’s game at The Valley.

‘City officials are working with the Police and Charlton Athletic to identify the person responsible and ensure appropriate action is taken against them.

‘If you have any information which could assist the club’s investigation, please click here to get in touch via e-mail.’
