Sarah Hyland looked upbeat when she attended a winter wonderland event on Tuesday night - after admitting she felt suicidal following kidney transplant failure.

The Modern Family star, 28, wore a plunging black dress under a white faux fur coat to attend an annual event toy event alongside her doting boyfriend Wells Adams, hosted by Katie Welch and Jordan Kuker in LA.

The outing comes after Sarah bravely unveiled the scars from her 16 surgeries as part of a tearful interview.

Actress, Sarah, revealed earlier this week that she experienced suicidal thoughts following the failure of her first kidney transplant and underwent a second operation in 2017. 

Breaking down in tears in an interview with Self magazine, the Modern Family star spoke openly about kidney dialysis and how she's not letting her scars define her. 

There was no sign of upset as the star was surrounded by her friends as she let her hair down at the event, after no doubt receiving lots of support from her fans.

Sarah looked incredible with her raven locks teased into curls, with a slick of dark berry lipstick adding some serious glamour on the night. 

She wore a pair of thick-rimmed glasses and hoop earrings and kept out the cold with a pair of tights and leather ankle boots.

Sarah revealed in her SELF interview that she is finally on the mend now after her health woes.

'For me it's always hard for KUPA to be on display,' she shared. 

'Still mentally it's hard to get over that. I think personally for someone to be so tiny to have a stomach that looks like the New Jersey turnpike, just shows who I am and what kind of character I have.'  

Sarah showcased the scars from her surgery and likened them to 'a samurai sword attack or a shark bite'.

Health woes: The actress explained that she had undergone seven surgeries before the age of four and since then the number racked up to approximately 16 before the age of 27

2012 saw Sarah undergo her first kidney transplant, donated by her dad Edward James. 

However towards the end of 2016, the kidney began to fail, for reasons that are still unknown. 

'We did all of these tests and all of these treatments to try and save the kidney, but they basically said that the transplanted kidney was like a house that caught on fire. You can't unburn a house,' she said.  

The beauty then underwent dialysis three times a week - each for four hour sessions between February 2017 and October 2017. 

It was in July last year that she found out that her younger brother Ian was a match. 

Thankfully, Sarah confirmed during the interview that there's been no rejection to the second kidney transplant and that she is 'healed and the numbers are good'.   

On Valentine's Day of 2017, Hyland went on dialysis, causing her weight to plummet, before she had the transplanted kidney removed in May 2017.

Sarah added that the physical ailments had a huge effect on her mental health too, and she even contemplated suicide.

'For a long time, I was contemplating suicide, because I didn't want to fail my little brother like I failed my dad.' 

Kidney dysplasia occurs when one or both of a fetus' kidneys do not develop normally, and the star has always been candid on social media about her health battles.

Sarah was diagnosed with condition as a child, and in May, she revealed some of her health struggles, including how her weight has dropped to 87 pounds, with hopes to one day lift weights again.

'I'll be home soon': Sarah's boyfriend Wells  offered her a touching message of support

Sarah also suffers from endometriosis, a painful chronic reproductive health condition and also developed an abdominal hernia earlier this year.

Earlier this month, her boyfriend Wells shared a sweet post about his love. 

He wrote: 'This beautiful specimen has had a tough couple of weeks,' he captioned a photo of him staring down her throat in a fun bar room pic.

'I'm here to remind you @sarahhyland that there is light amongst all the darkness. If you ever doubt that, just look at this picture and remember how awesome we are. 

'Throw on some sweats, order some Postmates and put on Home Alone. I'll be home soon.'

The actress's 14-year-old cousin Trevor Canaday was killed in Omaha, Nebraska and his father seriously injured when a suspected drunk driver smashed into their car. 

The Canadays set up a GoFundMe page for funeral and medical expenses, and Hyland — who earns an estimated $2.5m per season — donated $1,000 to the page, and shared a link to it.
