The Voice star Matt Gresham's controversial X Factor Australia past resurfaces as it's reveals how he really met and became friends with Guy Sebastian

The Voice isn't Matt Gresham's first appearance on a reality singing show.

After making it through the Blind Auditions on Sunday night, the 31-year-old from Perth failed to mention his controversial time on X Factor Australia.

In 2013, Matt famously dropped out of now defunct Channel Seven program and slammed all TV singing competitions for their lack of freedom for artists.

'I left the X Factor because I wanted to still have control of my music. If I continued on the show I wasn't allowed to do any of my own shows or bring out my own music,' Matt wrote on Facebook back in 2013, after shocking fans by dropping out.

In 2018, Matt discussed his X Factor departure with TNT magazine

'Being from Western Australia and from a small town just outside Perth, performing on a national TV show was exciting, and a massive leg up in my career, he said.

'It was very challenging in the end though, I felt like I was losing a lot of creative control over my art and didn't feel comfortable with the contract which lead to me pulling out of the finals. I am so grateful for the experience though, I met some amazing people and learnt a lot about myself.'

Since dropping out of X Factor, Matt managed to find success as a singer-songwriter and toured Europe, performing his own music.

The death of a friend two years ago led to him stepping away from his music career.

Explaining why he auditioned on The Voice on Sunday, Matt said: 'I'm from Western Australia, about two years ago I suffered with some really bad PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and depression and basically just quit music.

'I haven't really been able to do anything until this.'
