Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez headed to Sacramento on Monday, Jan. 27, to speak with Gov. Gavin Newsom and elected state officials about her agenda to prevent homelessness and support working families.
Martinez spoke briefly about her “Families First” plan during her first meeting as City Council president earlier this month, which seeks to “uplift women and assist families led by parents and single moms working two or three jobs” as well as people who may be on the brink of homelessness in Los Angeles, her office stated.
“While I look forward to speaking with our state elected leaders, what I’ve learned through nearly two decades of political experience is our constituents benefit most when we listen to one another,” Martinez said. “I value and welcome the dialogue with my state colleagues.”
Martinez was scheduled to meet with First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, State Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, D-Lakewood, Assemblywoman Luz Rivas, D-North Hollywood, and members of the Women’s and Latino Caucus.
It was Martinez’s first trip to Sacramento since she was elected president by the City Council.
Martinez, who represents the 6th Council District in the Northeast San Fernando Valley, was also scheduled to visit both the Assembly and Senate floors, to receive a resolution in her honor from Sen. Maria Elena Durazo, D-San Diego.
Rivas and Martinez have partnered to bring park improvement funds and street resurfacing to the predominantly Latino neighborhoods of the Northeast San Fernando Valley, according to her office.
“Nury Martinez is the embodiment of the hard-working families of Los Angeles,” Rivas said. “I am proud to be honoring and recognizing her as the first Latina to be elected to become the City Council president at the California State Capitol. This position holds tremendous power, and I know she will continue to advocate for our families while working tirelessly to alleviate the homeless crisis.”
