JJP releases 1st list of 7 candidates

Saturday, 14 September 2019 | PNS | Chandigarh

Amid efforts by some Haryana 'khap' leaders for rapprochement in the Chautala family, Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) leader and former Hisar MP Dushyant Chautala who had earlier announced to contest all the 90 seats in the Haryana Assembly elections, released the first list of party candidates on Friday.

The date for the State Assembly polls is expected to be announced by Election Commission of India in a couple of days.

The JPP was formed after a split in the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) last year. The party having Jat vote bank has also tried to project the image of a youth-centric party.

"I have always said that as family we are one. But as far as charting out our political course is concerned, let me make it clear that we are going to contest on all 90 assembly seats," Dushyant said.

Among the seven candidates whose names were announced by the JJP include a former minister and two ex-MLAs.  Devender Kadiyan will contest election from Panipat rural Assembly seat while Anoop Dhanak from Uklana (SC); Ram Kumar Gautam from Narnaund; Rao Ramesh Palri from Mahendergarh; Kamlesh Saini from Narnaul; Shyam Sundar from Bawal (SC) and Harsh Kumar has been named candidate from Hathin seat. Dushyant, grandson of former chief minister Om Prakash Chautala, claimed that voters who are eligible to exercise their franchise in the upcoming Assembly elections will vote for the party. Party will form the government in the state. The JJP's state unit chief Nishan Singh said that Harsh Kumar is a former minister while Gautam and Dhanak are former MLAs. Dhanak was among four MLAs of the INLD, had switched sides by joining the JJP. One out of Five MLAs had also switched sides by joining Congress, he said, adding all the five MLAs were recently disqualified as members of the Haryana Assembly under the anti-defection law by State Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kanwar Pal Gujjar.

Meanwhile, a family feud within the Chautala family last year had led to a split in the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), with Ajay Singh Chautala and his son and former Hisar MP Dushyant Chautala founding the breakaway JJP. The Chautala family feud has continued to play out in the public despite the INLD's split.

Seen as a major challenger to the ruling BJP until a year ago, the INLD has been going through rough times. With barely few days left for the declaration of date of Haryana Assembly polls, most of its legislators have switched over to the BJP.
