Monday, 11 February 2019 | Mrituanjay Kumar | Ranchi

Jharkhand kick started its maiden State Sports Meet on Sunday in a bid to provide better opportunities to players from less developed areas of the State.

Jharkhand Olympic Association Vice president, Pratul Shahdeo said the Association has organised the meet to bring out hidden talents from various parts of the State.

“We are satisfied with our efforts. Watching the Volleyball match between Ranchi and Godda was a treat to the eye. In places like Godda, Palamu and Latehar players are not getting even 25 per cent of facilities that their Ranchi, Jamshedpur and Bokaro counterparts get,” said Shahdeo adding that these players will surely win medals for the state and the country in the days to come.

Speaking on the details of the sports meet Shahdeo said, “On 10th February the competition for Archery, Yoga, Hockey, Athletics, Volleyball, Shooting, Handball, Bowling and Basketball will begin. Hockey and Yoga contest will be held at the Astro Turf Hockey Stadium situated at Morhabadi. Rest of the games will be organised at Khelgaon.”

In the competition the participant will contest for 153 gold 153 silver and 207 bronze medals. A total of 1153 medals will be distributed in 28 various kinds of games. Boxing and Karate competitions will not be included for technical reasons.

The international players of the State will also be honored during the closing ceremony. During the closing of Jharkhand State Games, cultural programmes will also be organized.

By the time this report was filed, Ranchi district was leading the medal chart by winning 15 medals including seven golds while Saraikela bagged six medals including three golds.

Jharkhand State Games will conclude on February 12 at Harivansh Tana Bhagat Indoor Stadium.

The Chief Guest of the closing ceremony will be Labour Minister Raj Paliwar, while Central Coalfield Limited, CMD Gopal Singh will be the special guest.
