A heard of wild elephants on Thursday killed a villager at Gullu village in Arang block of Raipur district, officials said here on Thursday.

The victim identified as Domar Lal Sahu was guarding his farm when the heard of wild elephants raided his farm and killed him, officials stated.

Locals then informed police and forest department officials which then sent the body for post-mortem.

“His family was provided with immediate compensation of Rs 25,000 while Rs 3.75 lakh will be provided soon,” Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) Rakesh Chaturvedi said.

Chaturvedi, claimed that due to continuous efforts from the department cases of death due to human-wild elephant conflict has reduced in northern Chhattisgarh.

Since, this problem is new to Raipur and adjoining regions, people here are not aware of how to deal with wild elephants due to which untoward incidents happen, he reasoned.

We will step up the awareness campaign in these regions, the PCCF stated.
