For implementing Poshan Abhiyan (National Nutrition Mission) at the grass root level and fighting against malnutrition, Punjab’s Mansa district was conferred with the national award for best performing district in Poshan Abhiyan for the second consecutive year.

Mansa Deputy Commissioner Apneet Riyait received the award from the Union Minister for Social Security, Women and Child Development Smriti Irani at a special ceremony held at Delhi on Friday. The previous year too Mansa district was conferred with the same award for successfully implementing nutrition campaign and changing lives of people in a healthier way. The state’s Social Security and Women and Child Development Department director Gurpreet Kaur Sapra said that the main motive of Poshan abhiyan is to put malnutrition to an end.

“The campaign is being run successfully under the Union Minister Smriti Irani whose main motive is to ensure better health for children up to six years of age suffering from low birth weight, lack of nutritious food, lack of physical development and to treat anaemia,” she said adding that women and children were mainly included under this program.

Making Poshan Abhiyan a widely run campaign in the district, activities such as baby shower for expecting mothers, campaign on breast feeding and information regarding malnutrition and its effects was widely circulated.
