An historic pub that closed last year after a car crash left a huge hole in its wall is now set to reopen.

A car hit the Black Lion Inn at Llanfaethlu on Anglesey in July - leaving the driver injured and a large gap in the wall of the pub.

It closed the 18th Century pub - owned by Leigh and Mari Faulkner - and the site has remained shut since then.

But now a mother and daughter are taking over the pub and will reopen the site as a cafe and a food, drink and gift shop.

Annest Rowlands is moving across from Blas Llynon cafe and shop at Melin Llynnon while her mum Gwenan Rowlands has run Blas Mwy cafe in Oriel Mon for a decade.

They will reopen the pub site in April.

Leigh and Mari Faulkner said: "We worked hard to renovate the building and set up the business, won some awards and supported local food and drink producers but after the accident we had time to re-evaluate and decided it was time for someone else to take on the next chapter in the history of the Black Lion.

"We'd like to thank you all for your support since we opened and we hope you'll come and continue support a local mother and daughter in a new period at the Black Lion."

Annest said she and her mum intended to work together to once again establish the site as a place for good food - focusing more on the daytime trade and hoping to bring in more local customers.

Talking about working alongside her mum, Annest, 39, said: "Although we have been involved in each other's businesses we have never been in business together.

"She is the brains behind the food and has been in catering all her life - our ethos is all about homemade produce, using local ingredients wherever possible and made on site.

"The Black Lion had a good reputation but was more focused on evening trade while we intend to focus on the daytime with the cafe and shop.

"We will also be doing some evenings as well, particularly in the summer, with special events and serving local beers, ciders and gins."
