Birding enthusiasts can get a glimpse into the private life of nesting herons at a special viewing event in Pwllheli next week.

Guides from the North Wales Wildlife Trust will be providing telescopes at a viewpoint near the car park at Lon Cob Bach on Saturday, March 19.

To take part, just turn up at the car park between 10.30am-4pm where guides will be waiting.

There will also be activities for children, guided walks round Pwllheli Harbour at 11.30am and 2.30pm, and information about other wildlife in the area.

Organiser Geoff Gibbs said: “This is just the time to see herons at the nest, before the leaves come out – and there should be chicks to see as well.”

The Grey Heron nest in colonies (heronries) and one of the most accessible in North Wales is near Pont Solomon, Pwllheli , which has about 10 pairs.

Their prey included fish such as eels and sticklebacks, frogs, voles and even small birds.

Mr Gibbs, Caernarfonshire's representative for the British Trust for Ornithology, added: "Herons are early breeders and in late March there will be plenty of activity as the adult birds clack their bills and croak to their neighbours.

"Both parents take turns on the nest, the changeover being a delicate operation as the large birds have to manoeuvre themselves without damaging the eggs."
