Aldi has announced plans to build a new store in Bangor.

The cut-price supermarket chain has today said that it is preparing to open a new store at the former Blakemore cash and carry site off Caernarfon Road.

The plan would see the company close its current Garth Road store, and move the 27 full-time jobs to the new site.

It would also create 10 further positions.

An Aldi spokesman said: "We are delighted to announce our intentions to work with [developer] Freshwater to create a new Aldi store off Caernarfon Road.

“A new store at this location would provide residents of Bangor with a greater level of parking, and a high-quality, modern store providing customers with a modern shopping experience, whilst still stocking the same range of award-winning products.”

The proposed supermarket would be 1,254m² in size, with 113 car parking spaces.

It would also see work carried out to try to improve the road layout outside the proposed store.

A roundabout would be created at the shared point of access to the site and neighbouring Dunelm store.

Members of the public are now being asked to have their say on the plans.

A public exhibition will be held by Aldi and developer Freshwater on Friday, March 8 at Bangor Methodist Church on the High Street.

It will be open to the public from 2.30pm until 6.30pm.
