A newsagent has today told of the horror of being held at knifepoint as his shop was robbed in broad daylight.

Sunny Thomas, who runs Billy Mac's on Augusta Street, Llandudno was working at the shop on Wednesday evening when a man allegedly armed with a knife walked in.

Despite initially attempting to fight him off with a stick, the 51-year-old from Bangor said he was held to the floor behind the counter at knifepoint, after being forced to open the till.

The whole incident, that allegedly took place at around 6.30pm, was caught on Mr Thomas' CCTV camera.

He told how the man, who made off with around £300, quickly fled the scene.

Mr Thomas, who moved to the region 10 years ago, was not injured but said he was left feeling shaken and scared.

Speaking to North Wales Live , he said: "I was standing at the till looking at my phone because I had a missed call, and I saw a man walk in.

"He came closer to the till and showed me a knife - it looked like a grass cutting blade, it was very sharp.

"I was shocked. I tried to hit him with a stick but he told me to sit down on the floor and to give him all the money from the till.

"I did what he said because I was scared. He was holding a knife to my face.

"There was nobody else in the shop at the time, it was a rainy and windy day, so I hadn't had many customers. He took the money and he ran away.

"I ran after him, but he'd gone. I asked someone to call the police, and they came within five minues."

North Wales Police said a man, from the Merseyside area, has been arrested in connection with the armed robbery.

They said the man had entered the Billy Macs store and threatened the owner with a bladed weapon before making off with a quantity of cash.

The man was arrested for a similar incident that happened in Penrhyn Bay on Monday, August 12, after a man entered Broadway Newsagents around 8.20pm and threatened staff with a bladed weapon before making off with cash.

He added: "It's the first time anything like this has happened to me. There's a lot of robberies and killings in India, but I've never heard of anything like this happening here before.

"I was just shocked, I couldn't do anything, I just had to follow what he said.

"It all happened very suddenly, I just remember feeling very upset and scared."

Detective chief inspector Sion Williams said: "Understandably staff at these local businesses have been shocked by what happened but thankfully nobody suffered any physical injury.
