A man found dead behind a Tesco store died from drug poisoning, an inquest heard.

Mark Formstone, 46, was found "slumped" in bushes on Crescent Road, Wrexham behind the town centre supermarket by security staff on March 22.

An inquest held at Wrexham's Guildhall today heard the unemployed welder of Bryn Hedd, Southsea, had been "in and out of prison" and using drugs for some time.

John Gittins, coroner for North Wales East and Central said Mr Formstone, known locally as "Itch", had died as a result of opioid poisoning - a combination of heroin and codeine.

The use of alprazolam - also known as Xanax - a drug used to manage anxiety also contributed to his death, that would have been "enhanced by the use of alcohol" Mr Gittins said.

Despite "sofa surfing" for some time following his release from prison, Mr Formstone had been staying with his mum in the days before his death, the inquest heard.

A written statement by his sister, Rachel Formstone, read out by Mr Gittins said her brother began taking recreational drugs at around the age of 20, before "moving on to heroin and crack cocaine" later in life.

He had been offered help for his drug taking and alcohol use by local drug and alcohol charities, but "didn't want to bother with Cais" and had "burnt bridges" with the Elms centre, the inquest was told.

Despite his drug taking, Ms Formstone said her brother was a "nice, pleasant lad" with who she had a "happy childhood".

She added he will be "sadly missed".

Offering his condolences to Mr Formstone's family who attended today's hearing, Mr Gittins, said: "It would be wrong to paint him as an angel, but what I know is that he was a man who was cared for by his family and I know [Rachel] had many happy childhood memories together."
