North Wales MPs have reacted after 11 quit the Labour and Conservative parties in moves which have shaken British politics.

Yesterday MPs' Chuka Umunna, Luciana Berger, Gavin Shuker, Angela Smith, Ann Coffey, Mike Gapes and Chris Leslie left Labour to be joined today by colleague Joan Ryan.

Then just hours later Prime Minister Theresa May was dealt a blow when three pro-EU MPs, Heidi Allen, Sarah Wollaston and Anna Soubry, quit the Conservatives to join the newly formed "Independent Group".

The ex-Labour MPs cited the party's Brexit stance along with the leadership's handling of anti-Semitism as reasons while the three Conservatives left because of Theresa May's "disastrous" handling of Brexit.

It is the first time British politics has seen such a shift since 1981 when four leading Labour figures Roy Jenkins, David Owen, Shirley Williams and Bill Rodgers, broke away to form the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Today North Wales Labour and Conservative MPs gave their reaction.

Ian Lucas
Ian Lucas MP said he was "saddened" by his colleagues leaving

Wrexham Labour MP Ian Lucas said: "I am saddened to see colleagues leave the Labour Party.

"I believe the only way of making sure ordinary families are heard and served by British politics is to get rid of this Tory Government and replace it with a Labour one. We in Labour must learn from this week's events and stand united."

Labour MP for Delyn, David Hanson, said he'd known some of the politicians who'd quit his party for up to 40 years, adding: "They are wrong to leave and I won’t be joining them - a strong Labour Party is the only alternative to a Tory government.”

Mark Tami, Labour MP for Alyn and Deeside, said: "I always believe it is better to fight from within."

Mark Tami MP said it was better to "fight within the party"

"We live in very uncertain times, not only this, but Brexit. There are serious issues in the party and we are not dealing with the complaints about anti-semitism fast enough, some of the stuff that Luciana was subjected to was appalling.

"But we have got together as a party to address concerns and look outward, because Britain is facing its biggest test."
