Friday’s regional sports roundup: Stratford men improve to 8-1; former NSU and Pilots pitcher Mauricio suspended for 50 games in minor leagues

Men’s basketball:

Ron Davis scored 19 points and DeAndre Demiel had 16 points and nine rebounds as Stratford raised its record to 8-1 with a 77-72 victory over Truett McConnell (7-7) at Julie Conn Gym in Newport News.

Demiel’s jumper with 4:33 to go gave the Cardinals the lead for good at 68-67 over the visitors from Cleveland, Ga. …

Senior center Satchel Pierce withdrew from Penn State. The 7-footer came to the Nittany Lions after transferring from Virginia Tech. …

DJ Williams scored 18 points and Terry Nolan Jr. 17, including a 3-pointer in the final seconds, as George Washington held off District of Columbia rival Howard 70-64 at Smith Center.

Williams grabbed eight rebounds and Nolan had nine along with four assists for the host Colonials (3-8). Justin Mazzulla had four assists and 14 points, including a layup and two free throws that led to a 67-62 lead with 45.6 seconds left.

Howard closed to three on a putback by Chad Lott before Nolan’s long 3-pointer with 11 seconds left sealed the win.

RJ Cole scored 15 points with seven assists and Charles Williams added 12 points, while Zion Cousins grabbed 12 rebounds for the Bison (6-4).

Women’s basketball:

Janelle Bailey notched a double-double as North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell become the Atlantic Coast Conference’s all-time wins leader in women’s basketball with an 83-62 victory over UNC Greensboro on Friday night at Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill.

Hatchell, in her 33rd season at UNC, passes former Virginia head coach Debbie Ryan with her 740th victory. Hatchell is 740-314 with the Tar Heels.

Stephanie Watts added 19 points for North Carolina (7-4) to go along with Bailey’s 23 points and 10 rebounds. …

Bridgewater (7-3) beat visiting Apprentice 85-66 in the Shenandoah Valley, dropping the Builders to 1-8.

Williamsburg Christian Academy graduate Aquazia Jones had a triple-double for Apprentice: 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists, leading her team in every category. Also scoring in double digits for the Builders were Latrice Washington (14 points), Alexis Wethington (12), reserve Sabre Clegg (11) and Jordan Wilson (10).

Four players scored in double figures for the Eagles, who led 40-34 at halftime and took control by outscoring Apprentice 24-11 in the third quarter. Ahlia Moone had 17 points, Allie Coburn and Briana Moore had 15 apiece, and Lindsay Estes scored 13.

PRO BASEBALL:

New York Yankees minor-league pitcher Alex Mauricio, a former Norfolk State standout who grew up in the Richmond area, was suspended for 50 games after his second violation for an unspecified “drug of abuse.”

Mauricio, 22, spent the 2018 season with the Staten Island Yankees and Charleston (S.C.) RiverDogs. He was 1-3 with a 3.86 earned-run average in 11 starts, with 49 strikeouts in 58 1/3 innings.

The right-hander was a 27th-round pick of the Yankees in the 2017 draft — he pitched for the Coastal Plain League’s Peninsula Pilots in the summer of 2016. He is now on the RiverDogs’ roster and will begin his suspension when the regular season begins in April.

PRO HOCKEY:

Despite a goal and two assists from TJ Melancon, the Norfolk Admirals (12-12-1-1) saw their ECHL regulation losing streak reach five with a 7-4 loss to the Toledo Walleye in Ohio.

It was the second of three games in three cities in three nights for the Admirals.

AJ Jenks had two goals and an assist for Toledo (16-5-2-0), which ended a two-game skid. The Walleye is affiliated with the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings and the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins.
