A 10-day celebration of J M Barrie and young people’s story-telling is to be held in Dumfries.

The Dreams for the Future festival, from November 24 to December 2, will mark Scotland’s Year of Young People and feature events for all ages involving story-telling, music and theatre.

The Moat Brae team is working with a series of partners, including Dumfries Academy, to organise the events.

There will be sneak previews of restored Moat Brae House, before it opens in the spring as Scotland’s National Centre for Children’s Literature and Storytelling, plus a writing workshop led by children’s author Cathy Cassidy.

A CrocRock! Carnival – themed around the crocodile that was Captain Hook’s arch-enemy in Peter Pan – and the town’s Christmas lights switch-on are being organised jointly with the council.

Moat Brae centre director Simon Davidson said: “We, and the JMB Creatives, want Dreams for the Future to be a celebration of young people’s story-telling, of Dumfries, of Moat Brae and our links to Peter Pan.” Its author JM Barrie is pictured on the right.

Moat Brae was saved from demolition nearly 10 years ago and its transformation aims to help with regeneration of the town by creating jobs and attracting visitors.

It also aims to inspire children and young adults, providing them with many creative opportunities.

Dumfries Provost Tracey Little said: “We are delighted by the partnership between Moat Brae and the council at this year’s Christmas lights switch-on. This year’s event, on December 2, will include some spectacular performances and there will be lots to do for all the family.”
