Loved-up couples will head to Gretna Green for St Valentine’s Day weddings on Wednesday.

There will be 26 ceremonies in the Gretna Registration District which includes Gretna Green and Kirkpatrick Fleming.

Gretna Registration Office will conduct two civil marriages and another 16 civil marriages will take place in authorised venues across the parish, including hotels and blacksmith shops.

Only eight of the weddings will be religious ceremonies.

The council confirmed that 25 of the couples tying the knot in Scotland’s marriage mecca are coming from England for their big day and only one from Scotland.

Last year, 23 couples were married in Gretna on February 14 compared to 32 in 2016.

The wedding industry is estimated to be worth £21 million to the local economy annually.
