Concerns have been raised over Stirling Council plans to allow businesses to advertise on roundabouts across the area in a bid to raise over £220,000.

Logie Community Council say the adverts - through which the cash-strapped local authority hopes to bolster its budget - would be a “serious distraction” for drivers.

However, the council has submitted to its planning department applications for advertising at several roundabouts in the area.

They seek to install: three panel and post signs at Logie roundabout; four at Castle View roundabout; four at Muirton roundabout; and others facing approach roads at Manor Powis roundabout.

Five are also planned facing each of the five approach roads at Springkerse roundabout in Munro Road.

In recent years the idea has been touted as an option in the council’s budget proposals but did not materialise.

As well as roundabouts, officials believe income could be generated by allowing advertising on waste vehicles and other Stirling Council-owned and operated assets.

According to documents produced in January 2018, officials estimated around £227,000 could be made in 2019-20 by selling advertising on council property.

Logie Community Council, however, has told the authority they feel advertising on the roundabouts is a step too far and could be a road safety issue.

In a submission to the planners they said: “We strongly object to the applications for the placing of advertising signage on the Logie and Manor Powis roundabouts.

“We believe that the only sensible signage on roundabouts should be directional and that advertising would be a serious distraction for those negotiating them.

“Advertising is a financial generator but roundabouts and official road signage require the full attention of drivers.

“Additionally, the Logie roundabout is close to Blairlogie outstanding Conservation Area and the signs would not be an aesthetic enhancement to its approach.

“We appreciate that Stirling Council may need to seek alternative potential sources of revenue, but would urge you not to grant permission for the adoption of this one.”

Community councillors were told, however, that as the applications were advertisement applications and not specifically planning applications, their comments could not be recorded as an objection or considered formally.

A Stirling Council spokesperson told the Observer: “The concerns raised by Logie Community Council, including aesthetic suitability and road safety, are considered as part of the assessment when deciding whether to grant consent for advertisement boards on roundabouts.

“Applications for advertisement consent fall under separate legislation to planning applications.

“The comments made by Logie Community Council regarding potential advertising signage on the Logie and Manor Powis roundabouts will be recorded against the application. However, public comments cannot be taken into account when determining advertisement applications.”
