The Met Office has issued a weather warning for East Ayrshire with wintry weather expected to hit the area this weekend.

Now residents across the area are being advised to prepare for the cold snap, with motorists too being told to be ready for anything.

Temperatures dipped to as low as 2°C on Thursday morning with frost appearing to be not too far away.

But weather experts say conditions are set to worsen on Saturday and Sunday, and that “heavy snow and blizzards may develop”.

Snow is forecast for the Kilmarnock area this weekend

Met Office boffins issued a yellow weather warning for snow – covering Kilmarnock and Irvine Valley – on Thursday, putting it in place between 12pm on Saturday and 10am on Sunday.

Forecasters say: “There is a risk of snow developing with strong southeasterly winds on Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning.

“The snow could be heavy at times, especially over hills where blizzards may develop, and is likely to drift in strong winds. Snow may turn to freezing rain above 200-300 metres leading to widespread ice developing on Saturday night.

“At lower levels, 2-5 cm of snow is likely, whilst higher ground could see 10-20 cm.”

Snow warnings are in place for the Irvine Valley also

Experts are advising that some “pavements and cycle paths might be impassable because of black ice” on Saturday.

Motorists are now being arked to be mindful of wet or icy conditions and vision obscured by mist or fog, with advice being for car owners to check their vehicles are in good working order with plenty of tread on their tyres and functioning lights.

They should also check their oil levels and keep spare capacity in the fuel tank in case journeys end up taking longer than expected.
