The famous Station Hotel in Ayr has had its name wiped from history – by bosses at South Ayrshire Council.

Officials have begun referring to the B Listed pile as the “building adjacent to Ayr train station”.

When pressed by the Post this week, a spokesman claimed the change was for “legal reasons”.

It comes as safety teams enter their fifth month working to stabilise the crumbling hotel.

The spokesman said: “To ensure we more clearly reflect the nature of this building - which is more than just the area formerly used as a hotel - it was agreed in September that the building would be referred to as the ‘building adjacent to Ayr train station’.

“That is the terminology that has been in use since that time, and that will continue to be used.”

The first time the new name was revealed was in the latest edition of the council’s online house “newspaper.”

A headline referred to “Building Adjacent to Ayr Train Station.”

And the opening paragraph reads: “Work continues at the building adjacent to Ayr Train Station.”
