Ten pubs in West Lothian are celebrating being accredited as Best Bar None Scotland venues.

Eight venues were given gold awards and two received silver, proof of the commitment to a safe and welcoming day and night life environment in the county.

The awards ceremony took place on at the Terrace Restaurant in West Lothian College.

The Black Bull Inn in Mid Calder and the Glenmavis Tavern and Smith’s in Bathgate were finalists in the national awards at Dunblane Hydro Hotel, where the Glenmavis Tavern won the national award for heart of the community.

The Best Bar None scheme, which is sponsored by Diageo, Heineken, Tennents, Edrington-Beam Suntory UK and Chivas Brothers-Pernod Ricard, is a part of the safer communities initiatives across Scotland.

Accreditation to the scheme shows the venue and its staff have met a standard that assures members of the public they will be able to enjoy a safe and welcoming atmosphere and exceeds the venue’s responsibilities to the licensing objectives.

The local awards were presented by police area commander Chief Inspector Alun Williams, who said: “I am delighted to recognise all participants and winners in this year’s Best Bar None initiative.

“The awards highlight the hard work and dedication our licensed premises have made in making our community a safer and more welcoming place. I would encourage all licensed premises in West Lothian to consider future participation in Best Bar None.”

To be accredited bronze by Best Bar None the venue must have achieved all the scheme’s essential criteria.

Silver means the venue has also achieved desirable criteria, while gold means that the venue is working towards bonus criteria which demonstrate innovation in their management practices.

Gold awards were presented to the Black Bull Inn, Mid Calder; Glenmavis Tavern and Smith’s, Bathgate; The Four Marys, Linlithgow; The Vu, Bathgate; The Cross Tavern, Whitburn; the Railway Inn, West Calder; and the Seafield Arms Hotel.

Armadale Bowling Club and the Livingston Inn achieved silver awards.
