The victim of an attack carried out by schoolchildren in Perth has thanked his friends and family for their support.

This comes after a sickening video, which was posted on social media last week, showed a first year pupil at Perth Academy being assaulted by a group of older children.

The older children in the video are believed to be from the neighbouring Perth High School, which is only around 400 metres away.

In the video, the young victims from Perth Academy, aged 12, can be seen being pushed, grabbed, kicked and thrown onto the ground while others stood by laughing.

Some of the attackers are believed to be as old as 16.

Posting on social media, the victim said: “Thanks to everyone who has commented in a matter of support, care or anything like that.

“I have read loads of comments and just want to say thank you all so much.

“The boys will be regretting the things they did.

“Thank you all so much. I really appreciate it.”

The victim can be seen lying on the ground in the video

The child’s mother said she was proud of how her son had dealt with the incident.

She said: “To see my son has taken it upon himself to thank everyone in such a mature manner really has brought a lump to my throat.

“To go through what he did and still comment with decency, heart and maturity beyond his years says everything about him.

“Couldn’t be prouder of you buddy.”

The attack happened on the grounds of Perth Academy at lunchtime on Thursday, January 17.

A friend of the youngster said the victim was taken to hospital with several injuries, but he returned to school the following day.

The friend added the victim did not know the boys who had attacked him.

One of the attacker’s mothers has since apologised to the victim’s family.

Writing on Facebook, she said: “I don’t feel any better. I’m really sorry.

“It’s such a shame on the guy.

“What my son did it’s disgusting. I’m really sorry.

“All of us were really shocked and upset.

“We try to give him the best education but we don’t know what happened with him.

“I don’t recognise him. I never expected this.

“We are really sorry. Sorry to the family.”

Officers from Police Scotland’s Tayside division have now confirmed an investigation has been launched.

They are expected to speak to the parents of the group of S4 and S5 pupils from Perth High School soon.

Police officers will also bring their ‘One Punch’ campaign to both schools, to highlight the dangers and consequences of fighting.

A spokesperson for Perth and Kinross Council said: “Perth and Kinross Council views any incidents of assault extremely seriously.

“The council can confirm a few Perth High School students entered Perth Academy’s campus last week and assaulted a student.

“Prompt and appropriate action was taken by both schools, including reporting the matter to Police Scotland who are currently investigating the incident.

“We will continue to assist Police Scotland as appropriate.

“It has been made explicit to those involved in this incident, and to all other students at both schools, that such behaviour is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.

“All students have been reminded of the actions to take should they become aware of intruders on their campus or witness similar incidents.”
