Voting is now open for members of the public to name a gritter. Over 700 names were put forward for West Lothian Council’s Name our Gritters competition and everyone can now select their eight favourite names from the 20 finalists. Voting is open until 3pm on Friday.

All the names were submitted by local school children and the options include: Alba Gritting Ye, Big Friendly Gritter (BFG), Dario Frangritti, Elvis Spreadly, The Greatest Snowman, I am Grit and Salt-tyre. And while pupils had a great time coming up with names, there is a serious message behind the campaign.

Executive councillor for the environment, Tom Conn, said: “The Beast from the East was a reminder that severe winter weather is hugely disruptive but during that time when many people were housebound, our teams were out working to get West Lothian moving and care for those in need.
