There was success for a number of West Lothian schools and area bands at the recent Scottish Concert Band Festival Final in Perth.

The annual event, which is made up of bands who achieved a Gold A ward or higher at a Scottish Concert Band Festival regional heat, took place at Perth Concert Hall last month and saw West Lothian excellently represented across several categories.

There was a Gold Plus Award for the West Lothian School’s Wind Ensemble in the Advanced Youth Band Class.

Deans Community High School Cluster Brass Ensemble picked up a Gold Award in the Ensemble Class.

Deans were also represented in the Achieving School Band Class, with Deans Community High School Wind Band picking up a Gold Award.

In the Advanced School Band Class, West Calder High School Senior Band achieved a Silver Plus Award and The James Young High School Senior Band received a Gold Award.

Executive Councillor for Education David Dodds said: “Congratulations to all of our young musicians who took part. It is clear that we have an abundance of musical talent in West Lothian. We are delighted to hear of their success and they can feel very proud of their achievements.”

The success of the groups at the festival came during a busy period for West Lothian Council’s Instrumental Music Service.

On Sunday, March 17, the West Lothian Schools Pipe Band travelled to Tallaght, Ireland and gave a fantastic performance at Tallaght’s St Patrick’s Day Parade. The weekend before the band gained second place in the Novice Juvenile A Category at The Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championships held in Inveralmond Community High School.

The annual Spring Concerts featuring the West Lothian School’s String Ensemble, Brass Band, Concert Band and Wind Ensemble took place at Deans Community High School with over 170 pupils taking part.

A ‘Big Band’ weekend also took place in March with a group of 24 students spent a weekend rehearsing a number of Big Band charts.
