Pupils from three West Lothian schools went head to head in the finals of an environmental competition.

P6 or P7 pupils from Whitdale Primary in Whitburn, Seafield Primary and St Paul’s Primary in East Calder took part in the Circular Economy Challenge.

They had to develop a business idea that uses or recycles products that would otherwise go to waste.

After eight weeks they presented their ideas at the final in Whitdale Primary.

Each class presented their idea to a judging panel made up of representatives from Veolia, Angela Constance MSP, Developing Young Workforce YW West Lothian and Young Enterprise Scotland.

The panel selected Wooden World Wide from Whitdale Primary school as the overall winner.

Their idea focused on turning pencil sharpenings back into pencils.

Animal Day Care, a sustainable animal care service, from Seafield Primary took seond place.

And St Paul’s project Got You Gold, which focused on replacing mining with recycling of gold and precious metals from mobile devices, earned thiord prize0.

Matthew Pastellas from Veolia said: “All of the judges agreed that the presentations were excellent and it was an incredibly difficult decision to choose a winner.

“Not only did each business demonstrate a great understanding of the circular economy but also of the skills required to run a successful business. Every school and every pupil should be proud of the effort that they all put in to the project.”

Angela Constance, who handed out the prizes, said: “The young people from all the schools were fabulous.

“I was really proud of them all and it was clear to see just how much work and effort they had all put into their business ideas.

“Choosing a winner was very difficult as every idea was good enough to win. I send my congratulations to every school and every pupil that took part.”
