A mum with incurable cancer has praised her devoted daughter’s campaign to help those affected by the disease.

Rachel Houston was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer in 2015, aged just 37.

Intensive treatment raised hopes of a remission but in November last year doctors found the cancer had spread.

News that their lives were to be cut short would have shattered most people.

But it only made Rachel and her family more determined to cherish every minute together.

Daughter Callie decided to do something special and, unknown to her mum, launched a fundraising campaign for Macmillan Cancer Support two weeks before her 12th birthday on Saturday.

Rachel, now 40, said: “I had no idea she had done it. She was staying at a friend’s house and when I woke up on Sunday morning, there was Callie’s birthday fundraiser ‘for my mum’ on Facebook.

“Her target was £200 but she reached £1400 by the Sunday night. Now it’s over £4150. It’s not every day you get a young one who would think about doing something like this.

“She is just a wonderful lassie. Proud just does not cover it.” Rachel, from Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire, knows her time with husband Stephen, 42, son Kalem, 15, and Callie will be limited.

But she is not letting that get in the way of happy times with loved ones.
