Frustrated former world boxing champion Scott Harrison has launched an online petition in a bid to have his licence to fight reinstated.

Harrison, 41, had hoped to get back in the ring and bid for a third world title after his release from jail last year but has been turned down by the British Boxing Board of Control.

According to the two-time world featherweight champ, they told him it wasn’t in his, or boxing’s, best interests for him to fight again professionally.

In the change.org petition launched earlier this week, Harrison says: “I was not even given the opportunity to sit in front of the British Boxing Board of Control to answer their claims.”

In 2013, the Glasgow fighter had his licence suspended after he was sentenced to four years in prison for assaulting three men in a brawl at a Spanish brothel.

Harrison left Spain before beginning his jail term but was extradited in 2015 to serve his time for the 2007 assault.

Just over a year later, he was brought back to Scotland to finish the sentence at Shotts Prison.

Harrison claimed he was treated harshly at the Lanarkshire jail. One prison source said the behaviour of some staff towards him was “inappropriate” and “disgraceful”.

Messages of support have been posted on the petition page.

John Clements, from Motherwell, wrote: “Give the guy a break.”

Alan Parris, from Kilmarnock, said: “We all make mistakes. This was in the past. Give him back his licence for boxing.”

Dad-of-four Harrison said: “The reason I would like to return to boxing is to provide for my family and win another world title. I would appreciate if you could take the time to sign the petition.”
