The M8 is the most dangerous road in Scotland, new accident data has revealed.

There were a total of 150 incidents on the road in which at least one person was either hurt or killed in 2017.

Only one of those - on August 12 - was fatal, although 12 saw people seriously injured.

A total of 354 vehicles were involved in the 150 collisions on the M8, and 207 people were hurt or killed.

New data reveals that the M8 is the most dangerous road in Scotland

The news emerged from analysis of nearly 130,000 traffic accidents which took place on British roads during the year.

The data is published annually by the Department for Transport .

It contains a breakdown for all A roads, B roads and motorways.

Data for smaller roads is aggregated.

The figures only include accidents which actually took place within Scotland - even if the road in question goes on to parts of England.

The second most dangerous road in Scotland was the A8.

There were 142 collisions there where someone was hurt or killed.

The A9 was third, with 123.

With 123 incidents taking place on the A9 in 2017 it has been named Scotland's third most dangerous road

Fourth was the A82, with 117 casualty-causing collisions.

The rest of the top 10 featured the A90 (with 115), the A77 (with 96), the A71 (with 75), the A89 (with 70), the A7 (with 66), and the A814 (with 60).


The analysis reveals there were four main roads in Scotland which saw at least four fatal collisions in 2017.

They were the A82 (with seven), the A9 and A77 (with five apiece), and the A91 (with four).

There were a total of 141 fatal collisions on all roads in Scotland, including minor roads.

A further 6,972 collisions caused slight or serious injuries - an average of nearly 20 every day.

Across the UK as a whole, the most dangerous road was the A4, which runs from London to Bristol via Heathrow airport .

There were 705 casualty-causing collisions on the road during 2017.

The A23 (which runs from London to Brighton) was second with 668, and the A38 - also known as the Devon expressway - was third with 656.

The A1 saw the most fatal incidents, with a total of 16 during the year.

There were 15 on the A38 and 14 on the A6.
