A former Queen of the South footballer is believed to have died after being struck by a train in Dumfriesshire.

Ross Cook, 19, played with the Championship side's academy and youth teams between 2010 and 2015 before moving on to play for South of Scotland club Nithsdale Wanderers.

British Transport Police confirmed they were probing the death of the 19-year-old after reports of a body being found on the railway line at Kirkconnel.

A spokesman for the BTP said that the 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene but there were no suspicious circumstances and his family had been informed.

Ross lived in Sanquhar with his family and played for Nithsdale Wanderers where his father Stephen is secretary of the club.

A Queen of the South spokesman said Ross was part of their Club Academy programme from 2010 to 2015. "During his time in the youth setup he was a team-mate of a number of current first team squad members.

"Our thoughts at this sad time are with his family and friends."

The South of Scotland League issued a statement which said they were saddened to learn of the tragic death of Ross Cook, a player with Nithsdale Wanderers.

"Ross played for Queen of the South as well as representing Nithsdale Wanderers in the SSFL."

It adds: "Nithsdale Wanderers league match against Heston Rovers on Saturday has been postponed as a mark of respect.

"In tribute to Ross we would encourage SSFL clubs to observe either a minute's silence or a minute's round of applause before matches this weekend."

Tributes have also been paid on Nithsdale Wanderers FC Fanpage.

One said: "Rest easy Ross, Love the Nithsdale Boys."

Another, from Lochmaben FC, added: "It is so sad to hear this terrible news, our thoughts are with his family and friends."
