A freak gust of wind blew a trampoline out of a garden and landed up on the roof of a three-storey building in the Borders.

The children's trampoline collided with a chimney stack and resulted in rubble falling 40 feet onto parked cars and the pavement below.

A specialist fire engine had to be drafted in from Edinburgh 35 miles away to attend the call-out at Victoria Street, in Galashiels , Selkirkshire.

Fire fighters managed to remove the trampoline from the roof and made the residential building safe.

One resident said: "It's not something you see every day.

The trampoline was blown from a garden on top of a three storey house

"It was like a flying parachute and it has caused a lot of damage to the roof of the property.

"It just shows you how strong the winds were on Sunday.

"One car in particular parked below was badly damaged by all the stonework falling."

A Scottish Borders Council spokesman said: "Following a report of fallen and dangerous masonry in Victoria Street, Galashiels, on Sunday the council attended and in addition to erecting barriers for public safety made immediate arrangements for the building to be made safe which was done so the same day."
