Jay McEveley would love to see Scotland snare strike sensation Che Adams.

But the Birmingham City star’s former team-mate fears he’s so good that England will come calling.

Adams is on fire in the Championship having bagged 19 goals already this term, including seven in his last six.

As revealed by MailSport , the 22-year-old is on Alex McLeish’s radar after the SFA learned he has a Scottish grandparent.

Adams hasn’t committed himself to a country despite featuring twice for England’s Under-20s almost four years ago.

McEveley played alongside the frontman at Sheffield United after the Blades plucked him from non-league outfit Ilkeston in 2014.

The defender, who chose to play for Scotland over England himself, says it would be a coup for McLeish to get Adams on board.

Che Adams has been in red-hot form this term to spark Premier League bids

But given his form for the Blues, McEveley expects him to be in the Premier League before too long and catching the eye of Gareth Southgate.

The 34-year-old said: “I’d be happy all day for him to pick Scotland because Che is a top player. It would be great for Alex to get a boy of his quality for the national side.

“But it will be difficult for Che if he has to make a decision.

“I did it myself. I played for England Under-20s but then my manager at Blackburn, Graeme Souness, found out I was eligible for Scotland – and that was it. I couldn’t say no!

“But Che is still in the early stages of his development. And he’s now a top-quality player in the Championship.

“He’ll be getting scouted by Premier League teams so what happens if he gets a big move?

“He’ll then be on England’s radar. Who knows where he might end up if he excels in the Premier League.

“I believe he’s good enough to do that.

“In football, situations can change so quickly. So I understand why it might be tough for him.” Adams burst on to the scene as an 18-year-old at Bramall Lane when he came off the bench in a League Cup semi-final and scored two goals against Spurs.

Jay McEveley in action for Ross County

McEveley remembers the impact he made and insists his talent was evident from his first Blades training session.

He said: “For Che to perform in that environment against a top-four quality Premier League side like Spurs was fantastic.

“He had no fear, it didn’t faze him. I’m not surprised to see what Che’s doing now.

“Clubs were bidding upwards of £10million for him in the transfer window but I could always see that happening with Che.

“I played in the Premier League for a number of years and watched top-quality strikers.

“But when he came in at Sheffield United – despite being raw – I thought this kid could be a player because he had all the tools.

“As soon as he started training with us, we could see he had something.

“He was strong, powerful and his finishing was brilliant.

“At 18, the strength he had was incredible. He was still growing but he was like a man.

“I compare him to David Brooks, who’s now at Bournemouth but came through at Sheffield United around the same time.

“He was built like the side of a fiver.

“But Che was fully developed at that age and could mix it with the older players.

“Nigel Clough was patient with him but once he got in the team he was magnificent.”

McEveley believes Clough was a positive influence on Adams’ career after getting his big break at senior level.

And the former Ross County defender, now coaching, believes the striker’s potential is limitless if he continues to improve.

He said: “Cloughie was great with him because it was different for Che at first, training every day at a professional level.

“At that time he needed a pro lifestyle.

“He took time to adjust in terms of living his life the right way and being a pro.

“He’s got that now and can be a top player if he wants to be.

“It’s up to him and I’m sure he’ll take the chance to shine.”
