Dover American Legion was established months after end of WWI

Community leaders joined a recent celebration to mark the 100th anniversary of Dover American Post 27.

Dover Mayor James Dodd, Assemblyman Anthony Bucco, members of the Dover Board of Alderman and Morris County Freeholders attended a ceremony June 1 at the William Hedges Baker Post on Legion Place.

Food, beverages and entertainment were provided for the veterans and their families following the ceremony.

Post 27 was the first American Legion post chartered in Morris County in 1919. 

In the Spring of 1919, months after the end of World War 1, or as it was called then, the Great War, more than 200 veterans assembled in the Baker Theatre on Blackwell Street and approved the plan and charter for the application of the Dover American Legion. 

Dr. Augustus L.L. Baker was elected as its founding commander.
