ROXBURY — The new Walmart Supercenter at the Ledgewood Commons mall is still on track to be completed in October, when other tenants will also make their debut.

The mall's previous Walmart store was demolished last May, making way for an "on-site relocation" of the new 170,000-square-foot Supercenter, set to open by Halloween. There also will be handful of new retail business including a drive-thru Starbucks and Barnes & Noble, Ulta and Five Below stores.

A newly renovated Ledgewood Commons along with a Walmart Supercenter in Roxbury are set to debut October 2020.

"I don't know of any other redevelopment or shopping center like this in our region," Roxbury Mayor Bob DeFillippo said. "I think it tends to get overshadowed, but for Roxbury and the surrounding communities in Morris County, this is one of the largest redevelopments."

The new Supercenter will be about 50,000 square feet larger than the previous space, which opened in 1999, and will offer a grocery store with a bakery, deli and dairy products along with electronics, apparel, toys and home furnishings. Mall owner Advance Realty is spearheading the renovation of the Supercenter, which was approved by the Roxbury Planning Board last February.

The Ledgewood Mall in Roxbury April 16, 2019. Walmart announced it will demolish the store in June and replace it with a larger supercenter, slated to open in 2020. After that, only Ashley Furniture, Men's Warehouse and Marshall's will remain open. Sports Authority closed years ago.

The upgrade is part of a $96 million company investment in improvements to the New Jersey stores in 2019.

"This is a big deal in Roxbury, and we're looking forward to it," DeFillippo said.

At the mall, the current Marshalls and Ashley Homestore stores are undergoing renovation and are set to open in September. The complex will welcome a 24-Hour Fitness, expected to open in 2021. The existing Barnes & Noble store will move over to a new building, with demolition and construction anticipated later this year. Additionally, the outdoor mall will house a DSW, Five Guys, Men's Wearhouse, Chipotle and Panda Express.

The 470,000-square-foot open mall is hailed as one of the most significant retail development projects in the state after the American Dream mall at the Meadowlands, DeFillippo said.

Ledgewood Commons first opened its doors in 1972 and is next door to Roxbury Mall.
