Formed in 1894, Bristol City are celebrating their 125th year as a football club. They play their football in the Sky Bet Championship, alongside Derby County, and finished eighth last season.

The Robins, as they are nicknamed, play their football at Ashton Gate, which has a capacity of 27,000 supporters.

Manager – Lee Johnson

Lee Johnson was appointed Bristol City’s Head Coach in February 2016. Since his introduction, the Robins have gone from strength-to-strength under his stewardship.

After an 18th and 17th-placed finish in his 18 months, Johnson guided Bristol City to 11th at the end of the 2017/18 season. That also included a Carabao Cup run which saw them beat Manchester United at Ashton Gate in the Quarter Finals, whilst they battled hard against Manchester City in the Semi-Final before falling to defeat.

Last season, the Robins finished eighth in the division and were in the hunt for a Play-Off position up until the final day of the season.

Johnson’s playing career kick started at Yeovil Town who were managed by his father Gary. He would follow his Dad to Bristol City in 2006, where he would serve them for six years as a player.

During that time, Johnson did enjoy a brief loan spell at Derby County. He played 11 times, however, failed to find the target.

He eventually hung up his boots in 2013 and thrust himself straight into his managerial career as he was handed the reigns at Oldham Athletic.

After keeping the Latics up in his first season, he guided them to 15th in his first full season in charge. The following season, Johnson guided them to fifth place before departing the club to join Barnsley in 2015.

He spent 12 months at Oakwell before Bristol City came calling for his services.

2018/19 Head To Head

It was another progressive season for Bristol City in the Sky Bet Championship as they pushed the Rams all the way for a Play-Off place.

The two sides first met in December 2018 at Pride Park Stadium. Jamie Paterson gave the Robins the lead midway through the first half, however, Derby managed to hit back just before half time.

Martyn Waghorn guided home from close range as he converted from a Mason Mount cross to ensure the points were shared in the 1-1 draw.

The two sides wouldn’t battle again until April 2019, with the winner likely to clinch the final Play-Off position.

The Rams ran out 2-0 winners and got off to the perfect start as Tom Lawrence found the bottom corner early in the game to give them the advantage.

It was a nervy second half, however, after Bristol City were reduced to 10-men, Frank Lampard’s side took control of the game.

Mason Bennett managed to break away down the right and he cut the ball back to an onrushing Jayden Bogle who made no mistake from close range.

Derby would go on to clinch the final Play-Off spot ahead of the Robins and Middlesbrough.

Key Man – Josh Brownhill

Josh Brownhill has made 132 appearances for the Robins since signing from Preston North End in June 2016.

The 23-year-old played 64 times in total for Preston and scored six goals before his move south.

He had previously played under Johnson whilst on loan at Barnsley, where he made 27 appearances for the Reds, and he became one of his first signings at Ashton Gate.

Brownhill has netted 12 goals for the Robins since his arrival three years ago, scoring half of those last season.

In total, the midfielder has made 223 appearances over his career.
