Bhubaneswar: Charges against scribe dropped

The move came two days after Mitra was admitted to the Capital Hospital here for treatment.

Bhubaneswar: Delhi-based journalist and defence analyst Abhijit Iyer-Mitra, who is currently lodged in Jharpada jail here, got huge relief on Wednesday after the Odisha government decided to drop all charges against him.

The move came two days after Mitra was admitted to the Capital Hospital here for treatment.

The state home department said that the state government took a decision to this effect after receiving Mitra’s letter of apology to the Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary, an official release said.

“Sri Abhijit Iyer Mitra has made an appeal to the Government of Odisha to consider withholding sanction to prosecute him in certain criminal cases pending against him. Taking into account his representation, the government has decided not to accord sanction of prosecution and also decided to take steps to withdraw other pending cases against him,” a statement issued by the home department said.

In another significant development, the Odisha High Court on Wednesday granted bail to Mitra in two cases registered against him at the Saheed Nagar and Konark police stations for his derogatory remarks on Odisha’s culture.
