NDA slams bloodshed threat in Bihar

Last Updated 22 May 2019, 11:07 IST

The BJP-led alliance in Bihar has slammed former Union Minister and RLSP president Upendra Kushwaha for his threat of “bloodshed if the mandate was hijacked on the day of counting on Thursday.”

“Khoon ki nadiyan bahengi (There will be bloodbath) if an attempt is made to hijack people’s mandate through unfair means,” said Kushwaha in an oblique reference to reports in a section of media where doubts were being raised over manipulation of poll results through EVMs.

“We are aware that the BJP president Amit Shah had said earlier that he has to win 2019 election at any cost. He may resort to any form of unfair means to win the Lok Sabha polls. But if somebody tries to loot the mandate/result, chances are people in Bihar may take up arms. There will be a bloodbath on the roads if any such attempt (of mandate loot) is made,” said Kushwaha, one of the alliance partners of the Mahagatbandhan.

“In fact, the Exit poll results are part of the larger design to thwart people’s mandate. The reports of EVM manipulation is quite disturbing and will have wide repercussions in Bihar,” he warned.

The ruling alliance NDA has taken strong objection to Kushwaha’s statement and asked the Election Commission to look into such threat perception.

“In a democracy, it’s the people who decide the winner. But the threat of ‘bloodshed’ is highly objectionable,” said Bihar JD (U) president Bashishtha Narayan Singh. His party spokesperson Sanjay Singh was more acerbic. “We are not sitting here with bangles in our hand. We are competent enough to give you a befitting reply,” said JD (U) spokesperson Sanjay Singh.

The Bihar BJP president Nityanand Rai, however, urged all the political parties to restrain from using such language. “Even if you are frustrated, you should refrain from using such language which may create a rift in the society,” said Rai.
