New Indian grocer taking over former Kitchen & Co. site

A new Apna Bazar Farmers Market is opening in May in the site of the former Kitchen & Co. store in the Center Pointe Plaza shopping center near Stanton.

Apna Bazar, which means “our own market,” was founded in 1995 in Jackson Heights, New York. 

It specializes in Indian foods. The company is one of the largest South Asian grocery and fresh produce stores in the United States, according to owners.

Apna Bazar is a new market specializing in South Asian groceries and fresh produce stores, is opening in May in the Center Pointe Plaza shopping center near Stanton.

Apna Bazaar, an Indian grocer which uses a slightly different spelling in its name, has operated for more than 15 years at 3311 Old Capitol Trail at Prices Corner. Another location opened in 2009 on Elkton Road in Newark.

The new Apna Bazar store at 1307 Churchmans Road, near Christiana Hospital and next to Home Depot, will offer organic produce, dairy and other grocery items. No opening date has been set.

Kitchen & Co., a housewares and kitchen supply store, had run its Stanton site for more than 20 years. The store closed this past November. 

Eric Brinsfield, owner of Calvert Retail which operates Kitchen & Co. and the Reading China & Glass stores, said he was the closing the shop because his lease was expiring. 

A Kitchen & Co. store off Del. 1in Lewes is still operating.
