With the expected election of Wilmington City Councilman Nnamdi Chukwuocha to the Delaware General Assembly, the council is seeking candidates to replace him.

Beginning Oct. 21, the city legislature will solicit letters of interest from District 1 residents interested in the seat.

Chukwuocha won the Sept. 6 Democratic party, ousting incumbent Rep. Charles Potter Jr. from the state House of Representatives. The councilman received 2,306 votes, or more than 59 percent of ballots. He has no challenger for the November general election.

The councilman will resign his post by Nov. 7 in order to take office in Dover, the council said in a news release.

Council candidates have until Nov. 21 to submit their resume and a letter outlining their vision for the district and the city.

Council President Hanifa Shabazz will appoint members of a special committee that will recommend Chukwuocha's replacement. It will include four other members of the council, and Shabazz will serve as chair. The whole council will approve or reject the selection via a resolution.
