A Lincoln man hit by a jeep Friday night has been cited for walking on the highway while drunk, Delaware State Police said.

The 33-year-old was on U.S. 113 near Ellendale walking on the dotted white line when he was hit, according to police. The driver of the jeep, which was traveling north in the right lane, honked his horn at the man, who then, for unknown reasons, stepped into the vehicle's path, police said.

The driver did not swerve and hit the man with his driver's side mirror, police said.

The pedestrian sustained multiple injuries and was transported to Christiana Hospital by the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit. An investigation determined that he was wearing dark clothing, did not have a flashlight and was not at a marked crosswalk, police said.

He was cited with failure to carry a light and being drunk on the highway.

The driver, a 23-year-old man from New Castle, was not injured or impaired in any way, police said.

The road was closed for about 45 minutes while the crash was investigated and cleared.
