Of the 12 Wilmington residents who applied for the vacant 1st District City Council seat in the fall, eight remain in the running.

They will be interviewed by the full City Council, who will form a committee Friday afternoon to hold a public meeting, review applications, take public comment and vote on a recommendation for the seat.

Whoever gets that nomination will then undergo another round of official City Council approval before being appointed.

The meeting will be held 4:30 pm. at 800 N. French St. It is the first time the selection process for a vacant seat will be open to the public in local politicians' recent memory.

The old selection process, amended this month, consisted of a closed-doors selection committee that only had five Council members. That process was used at least since 2006. Recent backlash over that process has halted most other legislative business in Council since December.

  • Thornton Carroll
  • Linda Gray
  • Haneef Salaam
  • John Fisher-Klein
  • Harry Marrero
  • Subira Ibrahim
  • Tyrone Johnson
  • Raheemah Jabbar-Bey
