A fire on Sunday morning ravaged the empty building once home to out-of-business Tower Cleaners at 1926 Lancaster Avenue in Wilmington, Battalion Chief John Looney said.

Firefighters headed to the vacant two-story structure about 6 a.m. to investigate some smoke, he said.

They instead found an active fire and called in the rest of the city fire department's crews to assist. Firefighters searched the building, which had apartments on the second floor and found no one, he said.

Approximately 35 fire and EMS personnel responded to the fire, Looney said, while New Castle County Volunteer Fire companies provide coverage for the rest of the city.

The scene was placed under control at 6:45 a.m. There were no reported injuries.

The blaze is now under investigation by the Wilmington Fire Marshal's Office.
