An emaciated female pit bull was found in an abandoned residence last week in Dover after previous tenants left her behind, police say.

The Dover Police Animal Control Unit responded to the building on Lakewood Place on April 2, according to a Tuesday night Facebook post by the agency. Officials said they weren't sure how long she had been left behind.

The dog was placed into "a safe keeping facility" where she received veterinary care.

Police say they contacted the homeowner and identified three suspects who had been renting the residence — Christina Dillinger, Joseph Dillinger Jr. and Tyriq James.

All three former tenants turned themselves in after warrants were obtained for two counts of animal cruelty, failure to inoculate for rabies and failure to license a dog in Delaware, officials said Wednesday.
