Saks Off 5th in the Christiana Fashion Center is closing next month.

The store is one of 20 that parent company Hudson's Bay anticipates closing this year as sales continue to decline.

"These decisions are never easy, but they are the right ones for the company," company spokeswoman Alexandra Cohen said.

Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th located in the new Christiana Fashion Center is closing in October.

Saks Off 5th, the outlet brand for Saks Fifth Avenue, is the first big store to close in the Christiana Fashion Center. It was one of about 10 stores to open in the center's first phase in the fall of 2015 and was the only Saks Off 5th in Delaware.

The store is currently having closeout sales, which will continue until October.

The Saks Off 5th building, next to DSW Shoes and Nordstrom Rack, will be the largest vacancy in the near-capacity center at just more than 30,000 square feet.

The Saks Off 5th brand has almost doubled in size since 2015, growing to more than 125 locations nationwide. But the stores have struggled, with sales down in every quarter since the start of 2018.

A week ago, Hudson's Bay Co. sold Lord & Taylor, another of its department store brands, to a clothing rental subscription company named Le Tote. Delaware hasn't had a Lord & Taylor since the Christiana Mall location closed prior to the most recent renovations.

In July, Hudson's Bay also closed all 37 locations of its Canadian home furniture brand, Home Outfitters. Saks Fifth Avenue is the only brand among Hudson's Bay's portfolio that has grown in sales during the past two years.
