Building partially collapses, closing street in downtown Dover
Dover Fire Department responded to a building that partially collapsed on South State Street Sunday night, officials said.
In a news release, Dover Fire Marshal Jason Osika said a section with multiple layers of bricks fell, causing the building to be condemned.
The remaining wall, which was used as support, also had several cracks, the department said.
When Dover Fire Department helped one resident leave the building, they said the gas and electric were secured. The Red Cross helped that resident with temporary housing.
Dover Fire Department closed South State Street between West North Street and the Green due to safety concerns.
The road will be closed until further notice, officials said.
A Dover Fire Department official said the front of the building will need to be removed while the inside is reinforced.
City officials are working with the building owner, his insurance company and a structural engineer to make the proper repairs.
