Man pleads guilty but mentally ill to 2017 fatal stabbing in Newark

A stabbing murder that happened in Newark in September 2017 has resulted in a plea of guilty but mentally ill from the victim's boyfriend. 

Rondell Veal pleaded guilty Friday to killing Sherrie Campbell at their home. Her body was found there when family told police she hadn't picked her son up at day care.

Rondell Veal pleaded guilty but mentally ill Friday for killing his girlfriend in Newark in September 2017.

Veal was quickly developed as a suspect. He was arrested after he was brought to a New York City hospital for wounds he took while trying to kill himself, police said.

Veal will be sentenced in September. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He faces the possibility of life in prison.
