A Dover police officer has been charged with causing a fatal, chain-reaction crash with his personal pickup while off-duty in September, according to authorities.

A grand jury last week indicted Frederick Pierce, who had been on leave with pay from the Dover Police Department since the crash, on charges of manslaughter, third-degree assault, speeding and second-offense use of an electronic device while driving.

Pierce was 29 years old when he crashed his Chevrolet Silverado into a stopped Ford Flex on southbound South DuPont Highway near Walnut Shade Road, state police said in September 2018. The Flex's driver, 44-year-old Catina Isaacs, died in the crash.

Issacs' car then crashed into the back of a UPS truck that hit another Silverado that then hit a Buick Envision, state police said. Pierce and the UPS driver were hurt in the crash.

The Dover Police Department put Pierce on leave without pay after the indictment.
