21-year-old shot at Red Roof Inn in Newark identified

The victim of a Newark shooting that happened early Sunday morning has been identified as Donte Hammond.

The death of the 21-year-old Newark resident has been ruled a homicide, according to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science.

A second victim, a 20 year-old man from Wilmington, was taken by private car and  admitted to an area hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound. 

His injury is not considered life-threatening, said police.

A man is dead after a shooting at the Red Roof Inn on South College Avenue in Newark, police said.

Both victims were shot in a Red Roof Inn on South College Avenue in Newark.

Gunfire was reported at the inn just before 1 a.m. Sunday, the Newark Police Department said.

Newark Police found Hammond on the second floor and performed life-saving measures, including CPR, but were unable to save him.

There is no information on the suspects, police said.

Newark's last homicide was Sept. 22, 2017, when Sherrie Campbell was stabbed to death by her boyfriend. He later pleaded guilty, but mentally ill. 

Before that, Newark hadn't had a homicide for three years

Gunfire was reported at the Red Roof Inn in Newark just before 1 a.m. Sunday.

The Newark Police Department Criminal Investigations Division is continuing to investigate this incident.
