A 26-year-old man died Sunday evening after a car hit him on South Walnut Street in Wilmington, police said.

Wilmington Police Department officers were dispatched to the 500 block of the street, across from the ShopRite of Christina Crossing plaza, at about 7:15 p.m. after receiving reports of the accident, the department said.

Responding officers found the victim under a Toyota, though police have not released any details about how he got there or what caused the accident.

The road was shut down for several hours as police investigated, and the driver of the car who hit the victim remained on scene.

The Wilmington Police Department's Traffic Unit continues to investigate, and asks anyone with information about the wreck to contact Master Cpl. Tavis Miller at 302-571-4416.
