Wilmington Police identify man fatally shot Sunday

A 48-year-old man fatally shot Sunday morning in Wilmington has been identified as James Broadnax.

Broadnax, of the New Castle area, was found shot in the 300 block of N. Franklin St. about 10:10 a.m., Wilmington Police said. He was taken to an area hospital where he died.

Police have not said where in the block Broadnax was found, but officers concentrated their investigation on a black sedan with a Pennsylvania license plate. The car's side window appeared to be shot out.

Police have not released other details.

Clips in The News Journal archives show that a James Broadnax took the stand in a 2004 trial in which his younger brother, Darius, was found guilty of second-degree murder. Wilmington police have not said this is the same James Broadnax.

During the trial, James Broadnax testified that he may have been the one who fired the bullets that killed Nate Hollis in 2003.

Broadnax was riding in the back seat of the vehicle when gunfire erupted. They had let his younger brother out of the car shortly before the shooting began, and James Broadnax said the two had been fighting earlier in the night but ultimately ended up in the same vehicle.

A woman who took the stand also testified that shortly after the shooting, she brought James Broadnax and his girlfriend into her home, where he proceeded to lie on the floor and cry.

He kept saying "They were trying to kill me," according to court testimony during the trial.

Prosecutors at the time said they were sure they had charged the correct brother, and Darius was ultimately convicted.

Darius, now 35, remains in prison at an out-of-state facility.
