17-year-old boy dies after being shot in Wilmington, 2 others injured overnight

Three people were shot in Wilmington overnight, including a 17-year-old boy who died after being taken to the hospital, according to Wilmington police.

The boy, identified by police as Taron Whaley, and a 23-year-old man were shot in Wilmington's East Side neighborhood late Monday, police said. The 23-year-old man was taken to the hospital in critical condition, according to police.

The shooting occurred at 10:33 p.m. in the 800 block of N. Pine St., police said. Investigators at the scene marked at least four shell casings on the road.

Hours later, an 18-year-old man was shot in the city's Ninth Ward neighborhood, according to police. He was taken to the hospital in "stable condition," police said.

The shooting occurred at 1:13 a.m. Tuesday in the 2400 block of Washington St., police said.

Wilmington police did not provide any further details regarding either shooting, citing ongoing investigations.

There have now been four shootings in Wilmington this month involving a teen. Two 18-year-old men were among six people shot in the city's Price Run neighborhood late last week, according to Wilmington police. Both were said to be in "stable condition."

Monday night's incident is also at least the fourth shooting this year on Pine Street in the city's East Side neighborhood.

In late February, three young men were shot at Seventh and Pine streets, according to police. Nakysha Richardson, 19, died after being shot in the 800 block of N. Pine St. in early July. Five days later, five children were shot in the 600 block of N. Pine St.

This year is on pace to be the second most violent year on record in Wilmington since Delaware Online/The News Journal began tracking gun shootings in 2011. So far this year, there have been 108 people shot, 14 fatally.

That number was only exceeded in 2017 when, at this point in the year, 134 people were shot. In 2017, Wilmington's most violent year on record, 197 people were shot and 32 were killed.
